The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank are currently transitioning beneficiaries from the old SASSA Gold Cards to new Postbank Black Cards.
This change aims to enhance security and comply with updated banking standards. The initial deadline for this replacement was set for 28 February 2025. However, it has now been extended to 20 March 2025 to accommodate beneficiaries facing challenges in obtaining the new cards.

Beneficiaries who have not yet replaced their Gold Cards are urged to do so promptly to ensure uninterrupted access to their social grants.
The new Postbank Black Cards can be obtained free of charge at designated retailers, including Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave, and Boxer outlets. To receive the new card, beneficiaries must present a valid South African ID or a temporary ID document.
The new cards are immediately active upon issuance and compatible with all National Payment System channels, such as ATMs and retailer point-of-sale machines.
They also offer benefits similar to the previous Gold Cards, including one free card replacement per year, three free in-store withdrawals per month, and one free monthly statement over the counter.
Why is the SASSA Card Being Changed?
The SASSA cards are being changed primarily due to the following reasons:
- Expiration of Old Cards: The current SASSA Gold Cards are expiring, and they need to be replaced to ensure that social grant beneficiaries continue to receive their payments without interruptions.
- Compliance with Banking Regulations: The new Postbank Black Cards comply with updated banking and financial security regulations, ensuring that all transactions meet modern standards for safety and efficiency.
- Enhanced Security Features: The new cards offer better security measures to protect beneficiaries from fraud, theft, and other financial crimes that have increasingly targeted social grant recipients.
- Improved Services: The transition aims to improve service delivery by providing beneficiaries with easier and more secure access to their grants through various National Payment System channels, including ATMs and retail points of sale.
- New Partnership with Postbank: Postbank is now managing the distribution of grants, and the new cards are part of this partnership to streamline operations and reduce dependency on other financial service providers.
