- Sebum production increases with temperature — your skin literally becomes oilier as the day heats up.
- Emulsions destabilise — most fluid foundations are oil-in-water emulsions that can break down when exposed to sweat and heat, creating a patchy, uneven finish.
- Pigments migrate — especially around the eyes and lips, where heat causes product movement.
- Oxidation accelerates — some foundations shift one or two shades darker in heat, thanks to iron oxide pigment reactions with oxygen and sebum.
2. The day-to-night make-up strategy
- Start with the right base. A mattifying primer on the T-zone and a lightweight, silicone-based longwear foundation are your first line of defence. Silicone-based formulas are hydrophobic — water and sweat don’t dissolve them.
- Set strategically, not heavily. Apply a light dusting of translucent powder to the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) only. Heavy powder all over creates a cakey effect and accentuates fine lines — especially visible in harsh South African sunlight.
